Zusammenfassung

Die Entdeckung der Konjugation bei Prokaryonten erfolgte durch eines der zufälligsten Experimente in der Geschichte der modernen Naturwissenschaften. Viele andere Forscher hatten schon versucht, Konjugation nachzuweisen. Trotzdem entschlossen sich Lederberg und Tatum, die an der Yale Universität arbeiteten, zu einem neuen Versuch. Sie benutzten einen gewöhnlichen Laborstamm, Escherichia coli-K-12 als Versuchssystem. Außerdem testeten sie nur wenige verschiedene Isolate dieses Stamms. Glücklicherweise wählten sie nicht nur einen der wenigen Organismen, die leicht Konjugation zeigen, sondern auch einen fertilen Stamm dieses Organismus. Aus ihren Versuchen entwickelte sich ein besonders fruchtbarer Zweig der Bakteriengenetik.
