Summary
An essential increase in productivity of machine tools and manufacturing-systems can be achieved by lowering the scrap-to-finish product ratio, the salvage-ratio and the technical outage time of the facilities and the control systems. Monitoring and diagnostic-devices are effective means to maintain and increase the availability of machine tools and the quality of products machined thereon by automatically predetermining failures and detecting faults. Especially when working in shifts with reduced personnel, such systems are of extreme urgency.
The report summarizes in comprehensive form the causes for the growing necessity of monitoring systems and systematically analyzes monitoring tasks. Representative examples from the industrial practice and from the development field describe the technical status quo and research aims concerning monitoring and diagnosis devices. A system for detecting edge-life completion by analyzing structure born noise is illustrated and a concept for numerical controls with high reliability and performance-standards is outlined. Furthermore a universal monitoring system is presented. The report closes with a survey of evaluation strategies for diagnostic-results.
