Abstract
Patients with transient ischaemic colitis are usually elderly and admitted as surgical emergencies. A characteristic feature of these cases is the abruptness of onset of bowel symptoms which consist of colicky lower abdominal pain followed by diarrhoea and the passage of mucus and blood. The haemorrhage may be moderate or severe and the patient may be in a state of shock.
