Successful Treatment of Acute Mesenteric Ischaemia

Abstract

The first successful embolectomy of the superior mesenteric artery (SMA) in the treatment of acute mesenteric ischaemia was reported by Shaw in 1957 [1]. Regression of the mortality rate for acute obstruction of the SMA has unfortunately not taken place since then, and around 90% of patients die. Less than 100 therapeutic successes had been reported up to 1979 [2, 3]. Thus, every particular case should contain useful observations and teaching.
