Vascular occlusion of the common carotid artery in the gerbil (Meriones unguiculatus) is a well-established animal brain infarction model. We have used a modification of this method (Bosma et al. 1981) in order to study the hemodynamic and metabolic changes during the acute stage of graded brain ischemia. Different regional methods were applied in the same animal: an autoradiographic double-tracer technique (Mies et al. 1981) for the simultaneous determination of cerebral blood flow with 131Iiodoantipyrine (Sakurada et al. 1978) and glucose utilization with 14C-deoxyglucose (Sokoloff et al. 1977), and a bioluminescent approach for the assessment of regional content of glucose (Paschen et al. 1981) and ATP (Kogure and Alonso 1978) from intact brain sections.
