Abstract

It seems probable that as early as 1814 C. Bell described the symptoms of inflammatory carcinoma of the breast (violet coloration, heat, and enlargement of the breast). Other early references to the disease were made by Klotz (1869), von Volkmann (1875), Bryant (1887), and Leitch (1909); Bryant described the typical symptoms in particular detail. In 1924 Lee and Tannenbaum produced comprehensive reports of 28 cases, but it was not until 1938 that the disease was again discussed (by Taylor and Meltzer, 1938).
