Abstract

In children, the need for replacement of the aortic valve, damaged by rheumatic valvulitis, arises less frequently than the need for mitral valve replacement (Table 1). There is usually, in addition, involvement of the mitral valve apparatus, which may or may not require operative intervention. This clinical observation is confirmed by postmortem studies, and it is doubtful if isolated rheumatic aortic valvulitis does occur [1].
