Abstract
Rheumatic fever, a social disease that “licks the joints and bites the heart,” is a nonsuppurative complication of streptococcal pharyngitis. It is ubiquitous in its distribution, but some families seem more susceptible than others: this susceptibility is potentiated by poverty.
