Abstract
Changes in cholesterol intake are generally reflected in changes in plasma cholesterol levels. Equations that describe this relationship are based on studies of populations and do not exclude marked variability among individuals. This variability may be attributed to genetic heterogeneity and interaction of the effects of dietary cholesterol with other components of the diet. The metabolic responses to increased amounts of absorbed cholesterol include, in man, a reduction in the synthesis and an increase in the re-excretion of cholesterol.
