Summary

In large industrial plants decentralized control offer advantages. For economical aspects this is confirmed by a comparison of interconnecting costs for centralized and decentralized structures.

For communication between geographically distributed control stations the bit serial line sharing or bus technique is presented as an appropriate means. The brief description of 2 process bus implementations typifies the to days state of the art.

The incompatibility between the various bus implementations makes it difficult to interconnect automation equipment from different vendors. Therefor experts from different German companies and institutes drafted a serial line sharing standard for industrial applications known as PDV-Bus. The most important design criterias and system features are described.
