Abstract

Utilitarianism provides an apparatus which gives meaning to the concept of an optimal population size or growth rate. For it is natural to define a social welfare function in terms of the utilities of the individuals that constitute society. And then, not only does the concept of an optimum have real significance, but within this framework the merits of alternative savings-population programs can be considered.
