Commodity Modeling Approaches to Resources, Energy, and Regional Planning

Abstract

Problems of resources, energy and regional planning need to be solved within a strong analytical framework. This has given rise to a number of modeling approaches or methodologies which can analyze problems, test policies and make forecasts of future outcomes. For example, a number of models have been constructed which explain the extraction and consumption of commodities of a natural resource type. This would pertain not only to deep mining and strip mining but also to the use of the ocean floors. Other models relate to petroleum and energy commodities. While yet another group relates to the impact of commodities on regional development. The purpose of this paper is to survey the methodologies which have been used in constructing such models, particularly those that refer to commodity market analysis. After a brief review of the basic methodologies, their application is then explored in terms of some basic areas of interest namely, resource models, energy models and regional planning models. In each case, suggestions are given for future research.
