Abstract

One of the greatest problems we face is the rapid increase in population. With the new drugs, life-sustaining apparatuses, and organ replacements being used to preserve and prolong life come many moral, philosophic, psychologic, social, economic, medical, and legal problems. This chapter discusses these problems with particular reference to genetic bioengineering, contraceptive and fertility measures, abortion, gerontology, suicide, euthanasia, and organ transplantation.

Based on a presidential address given by the author at the annual meeting of the Association of American Physicians (Arch. Int. Med. 124:215, 1969). It should be consulted for more complete references.
