Discussion of De Robertis’ Paper

  • Chapter
Brain and Human Behavior

Abstract

A. G. Karczmar, Loyola U., Medical Center: One of the most heuristic concepts of pharmacology is that of a specific receptor, chemically differentiate with regard to both drugs and transmitters. It appears clearly from Professor De Robertis’ presentation that the concept of Ehrlich, Langley and Clark is ready to “solidify” into a molecular entity. Dr. De Robertis’ approach is a direct attempt to “precipitate” and to isolate the receptor, and both Prof. De Robertis and myself participated some 10 years ago in a conference (cf. Chagas and Paes de Carvalho, 1961) in the course of which the work of Carlos Chagas, perhaps the first man who had the courage to employ this direct attack on the problem was first reviewed.
