Abstract
A surgically excised tumor is examined microscopically to obtain information which can lead to a prognosis of the life expectancy of the patient. A histological classification is prerequisite to this. Therefore, there have been attempts to classify the tumors of the various organs on the basis of their microscopic morphology for over a century. The postoperative survival time is then correlated with the type of tumor. By this procedure the “malignancy” of a particular tumor is determined. Thus, certain microscopic characteristics for slowly and rapidly growing tumors have been established.
