Zusammenfassung
Um einen in der Natur auftretenden Vorgang systematisch erfassen, um Vorhersagen über seinen Ablauf machen und um seinen Ablauf beeinflussen zu können, werden Theorien aufgestellt. Dabei ist es vielfach zweckmäßig, die Wahrscheinlichkeitstheorie und die darauf aufbauende mathematische Statistik zu benutzen, insbesondere dann, wenn Beschreibungsversuche mit Hilfe deterministischer Modelle fehlschlagen oder aber für die Auswertung zu kompliziert sind. Auf diese Weise hat man bereits beachtliche wirtschaftliche und erkenntnistheoretische Erfolge erzielt.
