Effect of Calcitonin on the Experimental Localized Bone Atrophy

Summary

In rats a disuse atrophy of bone was produced by immobilization of one hind leg by means of plaster splints. The diminution of the spongeous bone could not be prevented by calcitonin administration. On the other hand, the immobilized bones showed signs of periosteal apposition induced by the pressure of the plaster. This apposition was markedly increased by calcitonin.
