Transformation of Estrogens and Androgens by Human Adipose Tissue in vitro
Metabolism of estrogens or androgens in human adipose tissue has not been described until now. We found that 4-14C-17ß-Estradiol is converted to 4-14C-Estrone and 4-14C-Testo-sterone to 4-14C-Δ-4-Androstendione in significant amounts after a 30 min incubation period. Conversely, 6,7-3H-Estrone and 4-14C-Δ-4-Androstendione showed only slight transformation after 24 hour. 6,7-3H-Estriol was not metabolised. The addition of cofermenting NAD or NADH did not influence the conversion of the steroids. It may be concluded from this results, that human adipose tissue contains a 17β-Hydroxysteroid-Oxido-Reductase, which favours the formation of dehydrogenated, biologically less active metabolites.
