Summary
An attempt is made to summarize our present knowledge regarding the postnatal development of neuroglia and to solve the problem of where and how the numerous glia cells are formed, which in corpus callosum and other fiber tracts appear shortly before and during myelinogenesis. It is shown that these cells are formed in loco by mitotic division of undifferentiated glial cells. The mitoses and the subsequent changes in shape and structure of the neuroglial cells can only be demonstrated in brains fixed by supravital perfusion via the vascular system. The implications of the findings for the interpretation of results obtained in human material are discussed.
