Zusammenfassung

Schon 1896, ein Jahr nach der Entdeckung der Röntgenstrahlen, begann der Deutsche Becher, Bleisalz und Luft in den Darm einzuspritzen. Dasselbe Jahr demonstrierte auch der Amerikaner Cannon verschiedene Teile des Verdauungskanales mit Hilfe von Schwermetallsalzen. Im Jahre 1901 demonstrierte Hildebrand vor dem ärztlichen Verein zu Hamburg ein Röntgenbild, auf welchem das Quercolon des lebenden Menschen durch Wismut gut sichtbar gemacht worden war, und berichtete, daß er dieselbe Methode zur Darstellung des Darmes benutzte. Er fügte hinzu „Der Gedanke liegt nahe, auf diese Weise (nämlich mittels Wismut) Stenosen des Darmes, z.B. durch Carcinom, nachzuweisen und zu lokalisieren“. Diese Idee kam Hildebrand, als er bei der röntgenologischen Untersuchung eines Patienten, der Wismut bekommen hatte, viele kleine Schatten im Dickdarm bemerkte. Zusammen mit Rumpel blies er auch Luft in das Rectum ein, nachdem er Wismut oral verabreicht hatte.
