Zusammenfassung

Huber sowie Ferguson, Huber und Suess steuerten sehr wichtige Beiträge über die Zuverlässigkeit der 14C-Datierung bei. An Hand einer weit vorangetriebenen Dendrochronologie konnten sie zeigen, daß der 14C-Gehalt der Atmosphäre wiederholt geschwankt hat, wobei im jüngeren Postglazial Differenzen von bis zu 30 % gegenüber den heutigen Werten aufgetreten sind, so daß Proben, die ein tatsächliches Alter von etwa 5500 Jahren haben, von der 14C-Methode um 800—1000 Jahre zu jung eingestuft werden. Die Schwankungen im 14C-Gehalt der Atmosphäre folgen merkwürdig den Klimaschwankungen, so daß zu befürchten ist, daß während der großen letzteiszeitlichen Klimaschwankungen vielleicht sogar noch wesentlich stärkere Differenzen aufgetreten sein mögen.
