Zusammenfassung
Murein, der charakteristische, makromolekulare Baustein der prokaryotischen Zellwand enthält bei allen untersuchten Arten die gleichen Zuckerbausteine: lineare Ketten, die aus den ß-1,4 glykosidisch verknüpften, alternierend auftretenden Zuckern 2 N-Acetyl-2-Desoxy-D-Glucosamin und Muraminsäure = 2 N-Acetyl-2-Desoxy-3-0-(α-D-Carboxyäthyl)-D-Glucose bestehen. Eine gewisse, systematisch verwertbare Mannigfaltigkeit herrscht bei den 4–5 Aminosäuren, die als Peptid an der Muraminsäure hängen und die Zuckerstränge zu einem zwei- oder dreidimensionalen Netz verknüpfen. Neben L- und D-Alanin, D-Glutaminsäure und L-Lysin oder 2,6-Diaminopimelinsäure können D-Ornithin, Glycin, 2,4-Diaminobuttersäure, Serin, Threonin, Asparaginsäure und Threo-3-Hydroxyglutaminsäure vorkommen (Kandler, Martin, Platt et al.). Elektronenmikroskopische Untersuchungen an gramnegativen Zellwänden ergeben zusammen mit biochemischen Daten folgendes Modell: basaler, einschichtiger Mureinsacculus, darüber eine Schicht aus globulären Proteinpartikeln, dann Lipopolysaccharidschicht bis an die Oberfläche reichend, diese aber nicht vollständig besetzend; ebenfalls in der Außenschicht liegen die Lipoproteine (Burge U. Draper; De Petris).
