Abstract

During the last decades the techniques of roentgen microscopy have been highly-developed. The particular advantage of using roentgen rays to obtain enlarged images of microscopic specimens is the fact, that the interaction of roentgen rays with materia can be predicted according to simple, physical laws. Thus an enlarging system utilizing roentgen rays can be used, not only to obtain structural information, but also to derive information about the chemical composition of the structures imaged. In fact, roentgen microscopy is a method of microchemical analysis. In biology and medicine it is especially in the field of quantitative histo- and cytochemistry that such methods have found wide use. For surveys see Engström (1962) and Cosslett, Engström and Pattee (1957).

The principle of microradiography. In the microradiographic camera, A the sample and film are placed in close contact. The microradiogram, B is enlarged in an optical microscope, C. In the final micro- radiogram as reproduced in this communication white areas indicate a higher absorption of roentgen rays than gray and black. All microradiograms, except the microangiograms in Fig. 13, are reproduced in this way

Principle of the projection roentgen microscope. (From Carlström and Lundberg 1958)
