Zusammenfassung
Häufigkeit des Auftretens. Unter den erworbenen Herzerkrankungen des Kindes-, aber auch des Jugendalters kommt fraglos der rheumatischen Endomyokarditis und ihren Folgezuständen bei weitem die größte Bedeutung zu. Diese wird noch unterstrichen durch die Tatsache, daß eine solche Herzerkrankung in einem nicht geringen Anteil nicht zur Ausheilung kommt, wie es bei anderen entzündlichen Krankheiten dieser Altersstufe, z.B.der Pneumonie, Hepatitis oder Nephritis, die Regel zu sein pflegt.Sie neigt vielmehr dazu, durch Rezidive oder Defektheilung mit Funktionsstörung die Leistungsfähigkeit und Lebenserwartung des Patienten durch viele Jahre bzw.lebenslang erheblich zu vermindern.Es kommt erschwerend hinzu, daß auch primär leicht erscheinende und deshalb oft verkannte Fälle nicht mit einiger Regelmäßigkeit dem harmlosen Beginn entsprechend geringere Folgen zeitigen, sondern gleicherweise zu den genannten Spätschäden führen können.
