Zusammenfassung

Es gilt als sicher, daß die Alpen und ihre Randgebiete während des Quartärs von mindestens fünf Eiszeiten betroffen worden sind, nämlich von der Donau-, Günz-, Mindel-, Riß- und Würm-Eiszeit. In Norddeutschland rechnete man statt dessen meist nur mit drei Eiszeiten (Elster-, Saale- und Weichsel-Eiszeit); in den Niederlanden und East Anglia sind aber sechs Kaltzeiten beschrieben worden, von denen allerdings nicht stets sicher ist, daß sie zu Inlandvereisungen geführt haben: Praetegelen-, Eburon-, Menap-, Elster-, Saale- und Weichsel-Kaltzeit [Zagwijn (1)]. Während der drei älteren Kaltzeiten hat sich in den Niederlanden eine subarktische, offene Vegetation ausgedehnt, durchsetzt von Kiefern- und Birken-Hainen. Die echte Tundra ist aus dieser Zeit noch nicht bekannt. Ihre ältesten Nachweise scheinen aus der ElsterEiszeit zu datieren [Zagwijn (1)], aus der jüngst vom Nordrand des Harzes auch die Fauna einer subarktischen, offenen Vegetation beschrieben worden ist (Sickenberg). Neuerdings wurden ernste Zweifel an der Richtigkeit der Annahme von sechs Eiszeiten laut, denn die Riß-Eiszeit scheint tatsächlich aus zwei selbständigen Eiszeiten bestanden zu haben, getrennt voneinander durch ein bedeutendes Interglazial (Graul und Brunnacker; Schädel und Werner).
