Zusammenfassung
Unter dem Einfluß eines Antibioticums stellt die getroffene Zelle die Vermehrung ein und stirbt unter Umständen ab. Durch das Antibioticum muß in dieser Zelle ein vermehrungs- resp. lebensnotwendiger Vorgang blockiert worden sein. Je kleiner die für die Hemmung notwendigen Konzentrationen sind, um so spezifischer muß der Angriff erfolgen. Die am höchsten wirksamen Antibiotica hemmen die empfindlichsten Keime mit nur wenigen Molekeln pro Zelle. Theoretisch kommt jeder lebens- resp. vermehrungsnotwendige Schritt im Stoffwechsel der Zelle als Angriffsort für ein Antibioticum in Frage. Wenn heute für verschiedene Stoffwechselketten, z. B. Fettsäuresynthese, Porphyrinsynthese, noch keine Hemmstoffe aus Mikroorganismen bekannt sind, so können dafür zwei Gründe angeführt werden:

Nur von relativ wenigen Antibiotica ist die Wirkungsweise bekannt.

Die verschiedenen Stoffwechselketten sind durch zahlreiche Querverbindungen verknüpft. Sind die Verknüpfungen innerhalb einer bestimmten Stoffwechselkette sehr häufig, so kann die Zelle trotz der Hemmung einer bestimmten Reaktion innerhalb dieser Kette weiter gedeihen. Eine solche Hemmung wird nicht als antibiotische Wirkung erkannt, und damit werden solche Stoffe praktisch unauffindbar.
