Zusammenfassung

Yaws is a chronic contagious inoculable disease, which starts with a nonvenereal sore at the site of inoculation, followed in three or four weeks by generalised cutaneous and muco-cutaneous eruptions and involvement of the skeletal systems characterised by severe rheumatic pains, fever and malaise. The initial and secondary lesions may spontaneously subside over a period of three to six months. After an asymptomatic period of some years, punctuated with evanescent relapsing lesions of skin and bone, late destructive skin and bone lesions may develop. The disease is caused by a spiral parasite of the genus Treponema, named Treponema Pertenue.
