Zusammenfassung

Die Lehre von den Drüsen mit innerer Sekretion, sowie von den damit zusammenhängenden Krankheiten des Menschen gehen wohl auf die Arbeiten von Berthold (1849) zurück; Berthold führte an kastrierten Hähnen die Implantation von Hoden durch und stellte fest, „… daß der fragliche Consensus durch die Einwirkung der Hoden auf das Blut und dann durch entsprechende Einwirkung des Blutes auf den allgemeinen Organismus überhaupt … bedingt wird“. Damit erkannte Berthold klar die Wirkung eines von den Hoden gebildeten Hormons und man darf Berthold wohl mit Ferner als ,,Vater der Endokrinologie“ bezeichnen. Die Begriffe ,,Sekretion“ und „Exkretion“ wurden von Johannes Müller geschaffen, der Begriff „Innere Sekretion“ von Claude-Bernard geprägt. Aber erst sehr viel später nach dem ersten experimentellen Nachweis der endokrinen Aktivität eines Organs gelang die Isolierung des reinen Hormons. Nachstehende Tabelle gibt einen kleinen Einblick in die für Hoden und Ovarium zutreffenden Verhältnisse.
