Zusammenfassung

Im vorigen Jahrhundert wurden bereits ausgedehnte Zungenoperationen erfolgreich vorgenommen. Die radikale „Neck-Dissection“ führte erstmalig Crile im Jahre 1906 aus. Die Strahlentherapie des Zungencarcinoms geht auf Dickson zurück, welcher im Jahre 1902 einen Zungenkrebs mit Röntgenstrahlen behandelte. Dominici nahm kurze Zeit später die erste Radium-Bestrahlung vor, und Stevenson führte im Jahre 1914 die erste interstitielle Radium-Implantation durch. Nun trat die operative Behandlung des Zungencarcinoms zugunsten der Strahlenbehandlung in den Hintergrund. Zuerst bevorzugte man möglichst große Bestrahlungsfelder. Wegen der Schädigung des umliegenden gesunden Gewebes engte man später bei hoher Tumordosis die Felder ein und legte für diese Therapieform bestimmte Schemata fest. Durch die neueren Erkenntnisse in der Strahlenbiologie, der inneren Medizin und Chirurgie konnte erst eine individuelle Strahlenbehandlung (Röntgenbestrahlungsverfahren nach Chaoul und Coutard, Supervolttherapie, radioaktive Isotopen usw.) für jeden Tumor ermöglicht werden. Die einzelnen Behandlungsmethoden der Strahlentherapie und die heute üblichen chirurgischen Eingriffe sowie die kombinierten Behandlungsverfahren sind in den späteren Kapiteln zusammengestellt.
