The normal physiology of the digestive system

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Handbuch der Allgemeinen Pathologie ((1711,volume 5 / 1))

Abstract

The physiological process of digestion begins with mastication which serves to reduce the size of the food particles, moisten and lubricate dry food, distribute the salivary enzymes through the food mass and provide stimuli for reflexes that are important in subsequent stages of digestion.
