Zusammenfassung

Eine sehr originelle Geschichte des Lebens auf der Erde von seinen ersten Anfängen an hat der französische Geologe und Pedologe Cayeux verfaßt, der bereits 1943–1956 die quantitative Entfaltung der Lebewelt zu bestimmen versucht und 1953 in der populären Reihe „ Que sais-je“ eine kleine „Biogéographie mondiale“ veröffentlicht hat. Sein neues Buch enthält mehrere Karten und viele Statistiken über die mutmaßliche Zahl von Pflanzen- und Tierarten zu verschiedenen Zeiten in Funktion der untersuchten Zeitabschnitte, Flächen und verschiedenster Milieu-faktoren, wie Temperatur, Salzgehalt usw. Die letzten Abschnitte behandeln die Acceleration der tierischen und psychischen Entwicklung und die Theorien der Evolution.
