Zusammenfassung
Denkart und Methoden der klassischen Sinnesphysiologie ranken sich mit dem Ziel quantitativer Korrelation zwischen Erregung und Empfindung einerseits und den Reizparametern andererseits letzten Endes alle um den Energiebegriff der Physik: Kennlinien der Transformationssysteme und Schwellenkurven der zentralnervösen Anteile der Sinnesorgansysteme sind typische Beispiele. Entscheidende Fortschritte brachte neben der Vergleichsstärkenmethode der Psychophysik und der Ablations-und Exstirpationstechnik der Verhaltensforschung insbesondere die ungewöhnlich leistungsfähige Elektrophysiologie, die den einfachst und mit größter Empfindlichkeit meßbaren elektrischen Anteil der Erregung vor allem am Tier und nur in Ausnahmefällen am Menschen einer quantitativen Analyse seiner Zeitfunktion zugänglich machte.
