Abstract

Photosynthesis may fairly be termed the basis of life and the most important chemical process in the world. Most of the bulk and all of the energy value of foods and feeds are derived directly or indirectly from the products of photosynthesis. Typically, some 94 per cent of the dry weight of a plant or crop is composed of organic matter derived from photosynthate, and only 6 per cent consists of nitrogen and minerals from the soil. Photosynthesis is a major factor in supplying the raw materials of industry, and even in this atomic age the photosynthetic energy of fossil fuels is by far the world’s most important source of power.
