Zusammenfassung
Der Totalbestand an CO2 in der jetzigen Atmosphäre wurde von Goldschmidt ([1], S. 116) zu etwa 0,4 g je Quadratzentimeter Erdoberfläche, oder mit dem Areale derselben 510 Mill km2 multipliziert zu 2 · 1018 g (nach Hutchinson 1954: 2,35 · 1018) errechnet, und als mittlerer Gehalt in der Atmosphäre wurde bisher meist 0,03 Vol.-% bzw. 0,046 Gewichtsprozent angegeben. Man kann denselben als resultierenden Vorrat betrachten, hervorgegangen aus einem von Jahr zu Jahr durchschnittlich nur wenig schwankendem Umsatz von Verbrauch und Wiederzufuhr. Über die Veränderungen in längeren Zeitperioden hat man nur unsichere Schlüsse ziehen können. Zweifellos sind jedoch in früheren geologischen Epochen bedeutend höhere Gehalte aufgetreten. Hierzu sci nur die Angabe von Eskola zitiert, „daß während früherer orogeni-schen Perioden der Erdgeschichte die vulkanische Aktivität und damit wahrscheinlich auch die Produktion an Kohlensäure ein Maximum erreicht haben. Da die orogenischen Perioden auch Kulminationsperioden in der biologischen Entwicklung sind, ist die Annahme natürlich, daß eine erhöhte Zufuhr von Kohlendioxyd und eine entsprechende Erhöhung in der Sauerstoffzufuhr wenigstens eine der Ursachen zur Entwicklung höherer Lebensformen ausgemacht hat“.
