Zusammenfassung
Die Familie der Cucurbitaceen ist in erster Linie bekannt, weil sie zahlreiche Kulturpflanzen mit eßbaren Früchten liefert (Gurken, Melonen, Kürbisse; in wärmeren Ländern auch Arten der Gattungen Lagenaria, Luffa, Sechium, Trichosanthes u. a.). Daneben kommen in der Familie viele Arten vor, deren Samen, Früchte, Blätter oder Wurzeln giftige Bitterstoffe enthalten [Hegnauer, Rehm et al. (2)]. Einige dieser bitteren Arten sind als Ursache von Viehvergiftungen bekannt (Watt und Breyer-Brandwijk), daneben werden viele in der Volksmedizin gebraucht. In den meisten Pharmakopöen ist jedoch nur noch eine Art, die Koloquinte, offizinell. In den letzten Jahren ist das Interesse an den Bitterstoffen der Cucurbitaceen wegen ihrer nekrotisierenden Wirkung auf Tumorgewebe neu erwacht [Lavie et al. (2)].
