Abstract

Pulmonary valve stenosis has until recently been considered to be a rare form of congenital heart disease. Although it was originally described by MORGAGNI in 1761, only 68 cases had been reported up to 1949. TAUSSIG (1947) stated that she had never had the opportunity of studying a proven case. In recent years, however, as a result of improved diagnosis and the development of successful surgical treatment, many more cases have been described. In 1130 cases of congenital heart disease seen at the Clinic at Guy’s Hospital, 116 cases of pulmonary valve stenosis were found. This incidence, of about 10 per cent., agrees well with other large published series. Its importance may be gathered from the fact that in the same group there were 104 cases of persistent ductus arteriosus, a condition which is considered to be relatively common.
