Phototaxis of purple bacteria

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Handbuch der Pflanzenphysiologie / Encyclopedia of Plant Physiology ((532,volume 17/1))

Abstract

Phototaxis in the purple bacteria is linked to the absorption of energy by the type of chlorophyll which is present. Taxes in general appear to be related, in the purple bacteria, to the metabolic activities which support growth. In the green algae, flagellates, and gametes of higher plants phototaxis in not related to energy absorbed by chlorophyll.
