Zusammenfassung
Obgleich die Entdeckung der Thiole schon viele Jahrzehnte zurückliegt, wurde die volle Bedeutung dieser Verbindungen für den stofflichen Aufbau des Organismus und die Aufrechterhaltung der verschiedenen Lebensvorgänge erst in den letzten 25 Jahren erkannt. Bereits 1810 fand man die Aminosäure Cystein in den Blasensteinen von Cystinurikern. 1888 beschrieb de Rey-Pailhade eine nicht näher bekannte Sulfhydrylverbindung, die er Philothion nannte [42]. 1908 entdeckte Heffter die Reaktion der SH-Gruppen mit Nitroprussidnatrium [74], die auch heute noch zu den gebräuchlichsten Nachweismethoden gehört. Der Name Glutathion taucht zum ersten Male bei Hopkins 1921 auf [78]. Er verstand darunter zunächst ein Dipeptid, konnte aber bereits 1922 die endgültige Struktur des Glutathions aufklären. In diese Epoche fallen auch die ersten Arbeiten über die physiologisch-chemisch Bedeutung des Gluthathions und anderer Thiole. So wurden 1922 Zusammenhänge mit der biologischen Oxydation [79, 80, 147] und 1931 mit der Zellteilung bekannt [122].
