Zusammenfassung

Unter der Bezeichnung „Neuromyélite optique“ stellte Dévic im Jahre 1894 Beobachtungen zusammen, die durch eine akute Affektion des Sehnerven und des Rückenmarks charakterisiert waren Klinische Beobachtungen eines solchen kombinierten Vorkommens von Sehstörungen und spinalen Erscheinungen wurden erstmalig von Allbutt 1870 mitgeteilt. Gleiche klinische Mitteilungen folgten bald von Erb, Steffan, Chauval, Séguin, Noyers, Rumpf, Chisholm, Dreschfeld, Knapp u. a. Die erste anatomische Untersuchung solcher Fälle verdanken wir Achard und Guinon (1889). In den letzten Jahrzehnten ist die Zahl der klinisch und pathologisch-anatomisch beschriebenen Fälle erheblich vermehrt worden. Goulden hat 1914 51 Fälle zusammengestellt, Beck berichtete 1927 über 70 Fälle. Zur Zeit beträgt die Zahl der zu diesem Syndrom zu rechnenden Beobachtungen über 300. Vielfach wurde das Krankheitsbild unter anderen Bezeichnungen mitgeteilt, so als Dévics Syndrom, als Ophthalmoneuromyelitis (de Lapersonne), opticospinale Erweichung (Merkel), Opticomyelitis (Henneberg), Neuroopticomyelitis (Schaeffer) und Ophthalmo-Encephalomyelopathie (Barrera).
