Zusammenfassung
Während im Zuge der Assimilation und Dissimilation die Reduktion der Salpetersäure bis zum Ammoniak von vielen Mikroorganismen durchgeführt werden kann, ist umgekehrt die Oxydation des Ammoniaks bis zur Salpetersäure nur wenigen Bakterien möglich. Selbst unter diesen findet sich anscheinend keines, daß den gesamten Oxydationsweg vom Ammoniak bis zum Nitrat allein bewältigen kann. Immer teilen sich zwei verschiedene Bakterienarten darin, indem die eine das Ammoniak bis zur salpetrigen Säure oxydiert, die andere mit der Bildung von Salpetersäure die Oxydation zu Ende führt. Die Oxydationsenergie dient zur Assimilation der Kohlensäure, die die einzige C- Quelle dieser Organismen darstellt, soweit bisher bekannt ist. Der Vorgang wird in seiner Gesamtheit Nitrifikation genannt. Man beobachtet ihn überall im Boden und Wasser, sofern die Bedingungen dazu günstig sind. Er stellt die Schlußphase der Mineralisation des gebundenen Stickstoffs dar und liefert im Nitrit und Nitrat das Ausgangsmaterial für die Denitrifikation1. Unter den höheren Pflanzen scheint es keinen Vertreter zu geben, der in der Lage wäre zu nitrifizieren, selbst nicht unter den sog. Nitratpflanzen. Munsche (1955) z. B. fand keine Nitratbildung in Tabakblättern.
