Zusammenfassung

Unter Stickstoffentbindung versteht man die Abspaltung von elementarem N2 auf biologischem Wege aus Nitrat, Nitrit und N2O. Seit den Untersuchungen von Gayon und Dupetit (1882) hat es sich eingebürgert, diesen Vorgang „Denitrifikation“ zu nennen. Er soll auch im folgenden so genannt werden, obwohl das Wort nicht ganz zutreffend ist; denn ein der Nitrifikation gegenläufiger Vorgang müßte beim NH3 enden. Für die Reduktion von Nitrat oder Nitrit zu NH3, soweit sie physiologisch als Parallelerscheinung zur Denitrifikation zu betrachten ist, schlug Denk (1950) die Bezeichnung „ Nitratammonifikation“ vor. In diesem Sinne soll sie auch hier, wenn auch nur beiläufig, betrachtet werden.
