Den drei klassischen Zelltypen des Hypophysenvorderlappens: eosinophilen, basophilen und chromophoben Zellen stehen heute mindestens 6 isolierte Hormone gegenüber:

    das somatotrope Hormon (STH)

    das schilddrüsenstimulierende Hormon (TSH)

  3. 3.

    das corticotrope Hormon (ACTH)

  4. 4.

    das follikelstimulierende Hormon (FSH)

  5. 5.

    das zwischenzellstimulierende Hormon (ICSH oder LH)

  6. 6.

    Luteotropin oder Prolactin (LTH). Die Existenz eines melanocysten-stimulierenden Hormons (MSH), einer exophtalmusauslösenden Substanz (EPS) und eines erythropoetischen Faktors (EPF) gilt außerdem als gesichert.
