Im Vordergrund der literarischen Erscheinungen des Jahres 1956 steht die große Abhandlung von Skuja. Sie behandelt das Phytoplankton von 85 schwedischen Seen und anderen Gewässern, mit sorgfältiger Beschreibung von 1346 Arten und 171 Varietäten. Bearbeitet sind die Gruppen der Bacteriophyta, Cyanophyta, Glaucophyta, Chlorophyta, Euglenophyta, Chrysophyta, Pyrrophyta und Mycophyta. Besonders hervorzuheben sind die beigefügten 63 Tafeln mit lauter Originalzeichnungen, die geradezu künstlerisch ausgeführt sind.
