Zusammenfassung
Die Therapie der Schilddrüse mit Radiojod ist eine strahlentherapeutische Methode, welche unter Anwendung der Atomkernenergie abnorme Funktionszustände beheben und normale oder pathologische Strukturen zerstören, zurückdrängen oder im Wachstum hemmen soll. Die im Atomkern eingeschlossene Energie wird beim radioaktiven Zerfall unter Aussendung energiereicher Korpuskular- und elektromagnetischer Wellenstrahlen frei. Die emittierten Strahlen sind befähigt, die Atome und Moleküle der Materie zu ionisieren und im Organismus mannigfache biologische Wirkungen hervorzurufen. Bei gezielter Anwendung und richtiger Dosierung können sie erstaunliche Heilwirkungen, bei unsachgemäßer Handhabung schwerste irreversible Schäden im bestrahlten Organismus hervorrufen. Die gezielte, allein auf den Krankheitsherd beschränkte Auslösung dieser destruktiven Wirkungen bildet die unerläßliche Voraussetzung für eine therapeutische Anwendung der energiereichen Strahlen. Beim Radio jod wird diese Vorbedingung in nahezu idealer Weise auf dem Stoffwechselweg erfüllt. Die Durchführung einer rationellen Therapie, die sich auf dem wissenschaftlichen Verständnis und der ärztlich begründeten Anwendung der ionisierenden Energie aufbaut, setzt nicht nur gesicherte Kenntnisse über die kernphysikalischen und strahlenbiologischen Grundlagen, sondern auch über die physiologischen und pathologischen Gesetzmäßigkeiten des Jodstoffwechsels sowie klinische Erfahrungen in der Erkennung und Behandlung der Schilddrüsenkrankheiten voraus.
