Abstract

Kinetics is the science of energy transfer. It must, therefore, involve all physical chemistry, thermodynamics, electrokinetics, and physiology. Whatever form the activities of a cell may take, whether respiration, osmosis, the transmission of a stimulus, or the streaming of protoplasm, if work is done, this is kinetics, or dynamics, which is that branch of mechanics involving motion. Energetics is a newer term for kinetics; it has the advantage of laying emphasis on energy which is the essential quality of kinetics.
