Zusammenfassung
Ordnen wir die biochemischen Reaktionen, die organische Verbindungen oder Radikale mit einem einzigen Kohlenstoffatom einbeziehen (im folgenden kurz C1-Körper genannt), nach dem öxydationsgrad dieser Verbindungen oder Radikale, so grenzen sich drei Funktionsbereiche gegeneinander ab. Wir bezeichnen sie als Transcarboxylierung, Transformylierung und Transmethylierung. Der erste Funktionsbereich ist, vom vergleichendbiochemischen Gesichtspunkt aus gesehen, wenn wir also das Lebensganze ins Auge fassen, relativ isoliert und hat nur wenige funktionelle Bindeglieder zu den beiden anderen. Diese sind dagegen funktionell so eng miteinander verbunden, daß man sich gefragt hat, ob nicht die Transmethylierung obligat über die Transformylierung geht.
