Zusammenfassung
Unter Regeneration versteht man den natürlichen Ersatz von verlorengegangenen Teilen eines Organismus. Die Regenerationsfähigkeit ist eine Grundeigenschaft der lebenden Substanz und kommt bis zu einem gewissen Grade jeder Zelle und jedem Organismus zu. Die Entdeckung der Regeneration wird A. Trembley zugeschrieben, obschon gewisse Regenerationserscheinungen schon vor ihm bekannt waren. Trembley entdeckte 1741 den Süßwasserpolypen Hydra. Um zu ermitteln, ob es sich dabei um ein Tier oder eine Pflanze handle, schnitt er eine Hydra entzwei; denn nach der damaligen Auffassung konnte sich eine Pflanze nach dieser Operation zum Ganzen ergänzen, ein Tier aber nicht. Es zeigte sich, daß aus den zwei Teilen zwei ganze Polypen regenerierten. Inzwischen hatte Trembley auch die Fortbewegung und die Nahrungsaufnahme beobachtet, so daß er aus dem Experiment schließen konnte, daß auch tierische Organismen Regenerationsfähigkeit besitzen. Die Entdeckung Trembleys hat zu seiner Zeit großes Aufsehen erregt und zahlreiche Regenerationsexperimente an den verschiedensten Tieren veranlaßt. Im 19. Jahrhundert wurde dann die Regenerationsforschung wieder vernachlässigt und erst in den letzten 40 bis 50 Jahren in mehr physiologischer Richtung wieder aufgenommen. So kommt es, daß unser heutiges Wissen über das Vorkommen von Regenerationserscheinungen im Tierreich nicht weit über das hinausgeht, was schon Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts bekannt war.
