Zusammenfassung
Auf den ersten Blick scheint der Entwicklungszyklus eines Phagenteilchens einfach zu sein. Es heftet sich an ein Bakterium an und vermehrt sich in dessen Innerem. Nach kurzer Zeit, etwa 20 Minuten, platzt das Bakterium, und mehrere 100 Phagenteilchen werden in Freiheit gesetzt. Bisher betrachtete man diesen Entwicklungszyklus von zwei verschiedenen Gesichtspunkten her:

In Analogie zu Enzymvorstufen. Das Phagenteilchen wird als komplexes Nucleoproteidmolekül angesehen. Vom Bakterium wird angenommen, es enthalte einen reichlichen Vorrat an Molekülvorstufen, die dem infizierenden Teilchen so ähnlich sind, daß sie durch eine relativ einfache Reaktion in Phagen umgewandelt werden können, analog der Umwandlung von Trypsinogen in Trypsin.

In Analogie zu intracellulären Parasiten. Der Phage wird als Mikroorganismus betrachtet, der überaus hohe Ansprüche an sein Wachstumsmilieu stellt, welche nur innerhalb lebender Zellen befriedigt warden können. Insbesondere stellt man sich also vor, daß der Phage seine gesamte assimilatorische Ausrüstung verloren hat. Er benutzt deshalb nicht nu rim Inneren des Bakteriums befindliche Nährstoffe, sondern dessen gesamte organisierte Ausstattung an Enzymen.
