Zusammenfassung

St. A. Cain (1) hat in seinen „Foundations of Plant Geography“ ein Lehrbuch der genetischen Pflanzengeographie geschaffen, das einem ähnlichen Bestreben entstammt, wie es einst Solms-Laubach (1905) in seinen „Leitenden Gesichtspunkten einer allgemeinen Pflanzengeographie“ bestimmt hat. In den Überschriften seiner 4 Kapitel (Paleoecology — Areography — EvoIution and Plant Geography — Significance of Polyploidy) und ihrer begrifflichen Ungleichwertigkeit kommt der augenblickliche Stand des Gebietes vielleicht etwas verzerrt, aber doch zutreffend zum Ausdruck. Bezeichnend ist das Bestreben, in kritischen Überlegungen den Dingen auf den Grund zu gehen und so zu einer klaren Fassung der Begriffe zu gelangen und dabei die Hilfsquellen der Paläontologie und der experimentellen und vergleichenden Genetik voll auszuschöpfen. Daneben macht das Buch den europäischen Leser mit vielen nordamerikanischen Arbeiten vertraut, die ihm sonst leicht entgehen.

Der Beitrag berücksichtigt im Anschluß an Bd. 11 rund 300 Arbeiten vorwiegend aus den Jahren 1943–1948. Von weiteren 180 Arbeiten wurden mir bisher nur die Titel bekannt; einige wenige davon wurden ins Literaturverzeichnis, in Klammer gesetzt, aufgenommen. Eine sehr große Zahl von Arbeiten ist mir sicher noch völlig unbekannt geblieben, besonders aus Rußland und den amerikanischen Ländern.
