Abstract

This paper presents a review of some recent theoretical and experimental work on adsorption from organic liquid mixtures by graphitised carbon blacks. Several relatively simple systems conform reasonably well to approximate theoretical models, but for systems involving higher alkanes and alkanols adsorbed from solution in a lower alkane, complex phenomena are observed which indicate molecular structuring of the higher molecular weight component near the surface. Some preliminary data on very dilute solutions are also reported which again show strong co-operative adsorption at low temperatures.
